That’s the actual appeal, and most coverage of this trend gets it backwards. People buying a standalone alarm clock in 2026 aren’t nostalgic for analog dials or ringing bells. This is about ordinary, voluntary preference — a separate question from the growing number of households and institutions where a phone in the room simply isn’t allowed overnight at all. A phone that also serves as your alarm is, by definition, the same object serving your notifications, your group chats, and whatever you open at 1 a.m. when you can’t sleep. Buying a clock is a way of un-bundling the wake-up job from everything else the phone does badly at that hour. The question worth answering isn’t whether this is a good idea in general. It’s which kind of clock actually solves the problem you have, because the five real categories on the market solve five different problems, and picking the wrong one just swaps one disappointment for another.
