What is DontSnooze?
DontSnooze is a social accountability iOS app for habits, wake-ups, workouts, study, and challenges. You record short video proof of completing your habit and your friends witness it. If you fail, a random photo from your camera roll is published to your group for 48 hours — making the cost of breaking your streak real, public, and impossible to ignore.
How does DontSnooze stop me from hitting snooze?
A traditional alarm has a cost of zero when you snooze. DontSnooze adds a social cost: failing the morning challenge publishes a random photo from your gallery to your friend group for 48 hours. This is the logic of a commitment device: in a large workplace field experiment, reward-only incentives faded once the rewards stopped, while adding a self-funded commitment contract — a real stake on failure — produced behavior change that lasted up to a year (Royer, Stehr & Sydnor, 2015). People stop hitting snooze because the cost of snoozing changed, not because their willpower did.
Is the random photo from my camera roll safe and private?
Yes. Photos are only ever shown to the friends in your group, screenshots are disabled inside the app, and the image is automatically deleted after 48 hours. We do not store your gallery and do not share images outside your group. The mechanism is designed to be socially uncomfortable, not to compromise your privacy.
What kind of habits can I track on DontSnooze?
Anything you can prove on video. Common uses include morning wake-ups, gym workouts, study sessions, runs, meditation, language practice, sober streaks, and one-off challenges like a skydive, a marathon, or a trip. The app is habit-agnostic — the format is "video proof + friends watching + consequence on failure." Building an automatic habit takes time — a median of about 66 days in real-world conditions, well beyond the popular "21-day" claim (Lally et al., 2010) — which is why DontSnooze is built around streaks rather than quick fixes.
Why does group accountability work better than solo habit trackers?
Telling a friend your goal isn't enough on its own — research even finds that simply announcing an identity goal can reduce follow-through, because the social recognition gives a premature sense of accomplishment (Gollwitzer et al., 2009). What reliably changes behavior is a commitment device: a real, verifiable stake on the outcome. In one study, smokers who accepted a commitment contract — money they'd forfeit if they failed a later nicotine test — were significantly more likely to quit, and the effect still held a year later (Giné, Karlan & Zinman, 2010). DontSnooze makes that mechanism social: video proof your friends actually witness, plus a real stake if you fail. A solo habit tracker has no stake — breaking your streak costs nothing, because no one knew and no one will know.
Is DontSnooze free?
DontSnooze is free to download, and witnessing is free: when a paid member invites you through their link, you can watch their video proof, follow the guided witness experience, and react — without paying. The moment you want to run your own accountability — creating challenges, posting video proof, building streaks, putting your photo stake on the line — you need DontSnooze Pro, billed through your Apple ID (weekly $8.99, monthly $17.99, or annual $59.99 — about $5 a month).
Does DontSnooze work on Android?
DontSnooze is currently iOS-only. An Android version is on the roadmap but does not have a release date yet.
