What Clocky Actually Was

Clocky is a battery-powered alarm clock about the size of a hockey puck, sitting on two small rubber wheels, developed by Gauri Nanda while she was a graduate student at the MIT Media Lab and shown publicly around 2005 as part of her thesis work on tangible, physically interactive objects. Press the snooze bar once and the clock behaves like any other. Press it again, or ignore the alarm, and it tips itself off the nightstand, lands on its wheels, and rolls off in an unpredictable direction, under the bed or into a corner or against a dresser leg, ringing the whole time it travels. The only way to stop it is to get up, find it, and press the button on the unit itself. Nanda went on to found a company, Nanda Home, to manufacture and sell it, and the clock drew a wave of coverage from design and technology outlets in its first two years on the market, including a mention on Time magazine’s Best Inventions list for 2005.

The Trick Underneath the Trick

Strip away the personality (the googly LED eyes some versions shipped with, the fuzzy limited-edition shells) and Clocky is a narrow piece of engineering: a motor-and-wheel assembly built to survive a short fall and travel a few feet in a direction the user can’t predict in advance. That is the entire invention. It doesn’t get smarter over time, doesn’t learn the room, doesn’t vary its behavior based on how many mornings it has already lost. It runs the same physical routine every time, which is exactly what made it legible enough to explain in a six-second news segment and cheap enough to manufacture as a fifty-dollar desk object.

Why the Press Couldn’t Resist It

An alarm clock fleeing across a bedroom floor is, whether or not it helps anyone actually wake up, a genuinely good piece of visual comedy that works on a morning show without narration. That made Clocky an easy “gadget of the week” pick throughout the mid-2000s, an era when quirky physical objects out of design programs got outsized blog and broadcast attention relative to their market size. The coverage wasn’t really about sleep science. It was about the novelty of a household object with something resembling a survival instinct, built by a named inventor at a famous lab, which made for a better story than another plastic clock with a louder beep.

The Ceiling Every Physical Trick Hits

The more interesting part of the Clocky story is this: a clever physical solution to a behavioral problem tends to have a ceiling that a social one doesn’t, and Clocky illustrates why cleanly.

A wheeled alarm clock only has so many places it can plausibly end up. A bedroom is a fixed, small, mostly unchanging floor plan, and a groggy brain is surprisingly good at learning a short list of physical outcomes even while half-conscious: which corner it favors given the nightstand’s angle, which piece of furniture it usually wedges against, roughly how far it travels before the wheels lose traction on carpet. Within a couple of weeks, catching it stops being a forced, fully awake event and becomes a half-asleep reflex, not unlike silencing a phone alarm without opening your eyes. The trick has a discoverable, finite solution, and once a person finds it, the clock has been solved. This is true of most single-gimmick wake-up devices: Alarmy’s math-puzzle screen has the same shape of problem, since solving arithmetic becomes nearly automatic with enough repetition. Neither is a flaw specific to bad engineering. It’s a property of any fixed physical or logical puzzle. Repetition against a static problem produces mastery, and mastery is the opposite of a forcing function.

A social consequence doesn’t offer an equivalent shortcut to learn, because the thing standing between a person and going back to sleep isn’t a floor plan or a puzzle. It’s another person’s judgment, which doesn’t hold still the way a room does. There’s no single trick to catch, no one weak spot to memorize, because the “opponent” is a relationship rather than a fixed layout. That gap between a bounded physical puzzle and an open-ended social one is a large part of why the alarm clock industry has cycled through so many one-trick physical gimmicks over the decades, from extreme sounds and distant placement to puzzle screens and now wheels, without any single hardware idea sticking as the definitive fix. The same dynamic shows up outside bedrooms too: the clinical literature on repeated-signal desensitization documents how reliably a fixed warning, delivered the same way often enough, gets tuned out. A wheeled clock is a home version of that same curve, running on a much smaller sample size.

Does It Still Work Today?

Mechanically, yes, in the narrow sense that matters: a Clocky unit from 2006 with working wheels and a charged battery will do exactly what it did on day one, because there’s no server, account, or software update standing between the object and its function. That’s a genuine point in favor of a purely physical device; it can’t be sunset by a company pivot — and unlike a phone alarm, it keeps working in the specific rooms where a phone isn’t allowed to be at all. I can’t confirm its exact current ownership, manufacturing status, or retail availability, though. Nanda Home commercialized the original, and the clock and its later sibling products have, by most accounts, passed through more than one retail arrangement since. I couldn’t verify a precise, current, first-party account of who holds the rights today, and I’d sooner leave that blank than fill it with a guess.

Physical vs. Social: What Each One Defends Against

The honest way to compare a wheeled clock to a witness-based app isn’t which one is more effective. It’s that they defend against different things. Clocky defends against the moment of reaching over and silencing an alarm without leaving the bed; once a person is willing to stand up and grope around the floor half-asleep, the object has done its entire job, for better or worse. A consequence that depends on another person seeing the outcome defends against something with more moving parts, not just whether you got vertical, but whether you can convincingly explain to someone who knows you that you didn’t. Nanda’s clock deserves credit for identifying, correctly, that the real problem was never the sound. It was staying horizontal. It just solved that problem with a fixed physical routine, and fixed routines are the kind of thing a resourceful, half-asleep person eventually learns to beat without even meaning to.
