iPhone alarm too quiet? Five settings to check, in order

A Face ID iPhone can turn alerts down when it sees you looking. Five settings to check, in order, when your morning alarm is too quiet.

An iPhone alarm is often quieter than expected because of Attention Aware Features: on Face ID models, the phone lowers some alert volumes once its camera sees you looking at the screen. If the alarm is loud while the phone is dark and fades when you pick it up, start there.

Apple’s support page says the feature uses the TrueDepth camera, even if you never set up Face ID. Apple’s user guide says it lowers “some alerts” and does not name Clock alarms, but forum users report this symptom and this fix.

Five checks, in this order

  1. Turn off Attention Aware Features. Settings, Face ID & Passcode, then switch it off. Some iOS versions put it under Accessibility, Face ID & Attention. Recheck after updates; users report it switching back on.
  2. Raise the Ringtone and Alerts slider. Settings, Sounds & Haptics. Alarms follow this slider. On iOS 27 you can break that link: in the Alarms and Timers section, switch off Match Ringtone Volume and a separate alarm slider appears.
  3. Switch off Change with Buttons. Same menu. With it on, the side buttons move the slider, and a phone rolled onto in the night can end up turned down.
  4. Open the alarm and read its sound. Clock, tap the alarm, Sound. “None” means vibration only. If the tone is loud but easy to sleep through, a ranking of alarm sounds against heavy sleepers compares options.
  5. Check Bluetooth. AirPods in a case on the nightstand can still claim the audio. Disconnect them.

Then test. Set an alarm two minutes out, put the phone where it sleeps, and listen from the bed.

FAQ

Why is my iPhone alarm volume suddenly lower?

On Face ID models a common cause is Attention Aware Features, which turns some alerts down when the camera sees you looking. Apple’s user guide says it applies to some alerts, so whether it touches your alarm can vary. Users have also reported the setting switching back on after an iOS update.

Does the silent switch mute my iPhone alarm?

No. Apple documents that Clock alarms play through the speaker even with the switch set to silent.

Can an iPhone alarm have its own volume?

On iOS 27, yes. Under Settings, Sounds & Haptics, the Alarms and Timers section has a Match Ringtone Volume switch; turn it off and a separate alarm slider appears. Alarms created from a Sleep Schedule in Health keep their own volume control, so adjust that one separately.

How do I tell whether Attention Aware is the culprit?

Set a test alarm and leave the phone face-down on the nightstand. The camera needs to see your face, so a face-down phone should play at full level. If it is loud there and drops when you pick it up and look, Attention Aware is the likely cause.
