Two snoozes a weekday, nine minutes each, is 18 minutes a morning, times roughly 260 weekday mornings a year, comes out to 78 hours — a bit over nine eight-hour workdays spent specifically inside the snooze cycle, not asleep, not awake, just in the gap. That’s the whole calculation. Here’s where each number comes from and how to swap in your own.

The assumptions, stated plainly

Two snoozes. Not a universal average — a defensible baseline for someone who already identifies as a snoozer, based on nothing more scientific than how most snooze-tracking self-reports describe themselves. If you snooze once, halve it. If you snooze until you’re late, this whole model is underselling you.

Nine minutes. This is the actual default snooze interval on iPhone and most Android alarm clocks, not a study result — it’s a real, checkable number sitting in your phone’s settings right now.

260 mornings. Weekdays in a year, roughly. I used weekdays because that’s when most people’s alarms are load-bearing; weekend snoozing is real but usually lower-stakes and shorter, so I left it out rather than inflate the number with a softer assumption.

The math

18 minutes × 260 mornings = 4,680 minutes = 78 hours.

78 hours ÷ 8 = 9.75 eight-hour workdays.

That’s the number I opened with, and it’s the one worth sitting with: not “a bit of time,” but the equivalent of shutting your laptop for nearly two full work weeks, spent specifically in the snooze loop, every year, on autopilot.

Where this over- or under-counts

This model has a real blind spot I want to name rather than paper over: it treats every snoozed minute as a total loss, and that’s not quite true. Some of that extra sleep is genuinely restorative, especially if you’re chronically short on sleep to begin with — the cost isn’t the extra rest, it’s the interrupted, fragmented version of it that snoozing produces instead of just sleeping through to a later single alarm. If you’re trying to actually sleep more, moving your one alarm back is a better use of that time than fracturing it into three nine-minute pieces. The 78-hour figure isn’t “78 hours wasted,” it’s closer to “78 hours spent in the worst possible shape.”

The other undercount: this only prices your own time. It doesn’t touch what a late morning costs anyone waiting on you — a carpool, a coworker, a kid who needed breakfast ten minutes ago — which is real and compounding in a way a solo hours count can’t capture.
