Exposure to morning sunlight does not, by itself, stop someone from hitting snooze or oversleeping. It changes how biologically ready the body is to be awake at a given hour; it does nothing to the separate decision, made half-asleep at the moment the alarm fires, about whether to actually get up. Those are two different problems, and a lot of popular advice treats them as one.

The biology behind the first claim is real, and it’s covered in enough depth elsewhere on this blog that there’s no need to relitigate it here: light hits the ipRGCs in your retina, that signal reaches the suprachiasmatic nucleus, melatonin gets suppressed faster than it would in dim conditions, and your circadian clock entrains to a stable schedule. None of that is in dispute. What’s worth pushing back on is the version of this advice that circulated widely through podcasts and morning-routine content — including Andrew Huberman’s popular framing of morning light exposure — which tends to get simplified, in the retelling, into something closer to “get sunlight in your eyes and your mornings will fix themselves.” That’s the part that doesn’t hold up, and it’s worth being precise about why.

Two Systems, Not One

Think about a car with a badly timed engine and a driver who doesn’t press the gas. Fix the timing and the engine runs cleaner, idles better, responds more predictably when the driver does hit the accelerator. But the engine being tuned correctly has no bearing on whether the driver’s foot moves. Those are two separate systems connected by proximity, not by causation. One is mechanical readiness. The other is a choice made by someone sitting in the driver’s seat, and that choice can go either way regardless of how well the engine is running.

Circadian physiology and the moment-of-decision behavior at 6:30 a.m. work the same way. Morning light entrainment is the engine tuning — it governs whether your body is producing cortisol on schedule, whether melatonin has cleared, whether your internal clock expects to be awake at the hour your alarm goes off. The decision to silence the alarm and either get up or roll over is the driver’s foot. Improving one doesn’t automatically move the other, because the second one isn’t physiological. It’s a choice, made in a specific ten-second window, by a person whose judgment in that window is not operating under ordinary conditions.

This is the distinction the popularized advice glosses over. Fix your light exposure and you will, correctly, feel less biologically resistant to being awake. You will not have solved the part of the problem that happens when your hand finds the phone, your thumb finds the snooze button, and you’re back asleep before the decision fully registered as a decision at all.

The Person With the Perfect Light Routine

Picture someone who has done everything the light advice recommends. A sunrise-simulating lamp on a timer. An east-facing window they’ve deliberately arranged their bed near. A habit, genuinely maintained for months, of stepping outside within ten minutes of waking on the days they can. Their circadian rhythm, by any reasonable measure, is well entrained. Their evening melatonin onset is on schedule. Their morning cortisol curve looks like the textbook diagram.

And they still, some mornings, reach over, silence the alarm, and go back to sleep.

The light routine didn’t fail. It was never positioned to intervene at that moment — the alarm firing and the decision to respond to it happen before the light routine gets a chance to do anything, while the lamp is still warming up and the sun hasn’t been seen yet. Silencing an alarm is an action that takes under two seconds and requires no meaningful cognitive engagement. It can be executed by someone who is, functionally, still asleep. No amount of correctly timed photons changes the fact that the button is within arm’s reach and the decision to press it doesn’t route through the part of the brain that light exposure improves.

This is a genuinely self-contained way to put the whole argument: morning light works on circadian physiology — the biological readiness to be awake — while the choice to get up when an alarm fires is a behavioral decision made in real time, and no amount of well-timed light exposure removes that decision or makes it for you.

It isn’t that the popularized light advice is wrong about the biology. It’s that it implicitly promises an outcome — “you’ll stop struggling to get up” — that the biology doesn’t fully deliver on its own. The marketing simplification happens somewhere between the peer-reviewed finding (“morning light exposure phase-advances the circadian clock and speeds melatonin clearance”) and the consumer takeaway (“get sunlight and your wake-up problems go away”). The first statement is precise and true. The second is a promise about behavior that the biology was never positioned to make.

To be fair to the science and to the people who popularized it: nobody serious claims light exposure overrides free will or makes the alarm physically unreachable. The overreach isn’t usually stated outright — it’s implied by omission, in how the advice gets marketed as a complete fix rather than half of one.

There’s also a version of this that runs the other direction and deserves equal skepticism: treating light and behavior as if they have nothing to do with each other. That’s not right either. A well-entrained circadian rhythm does make the moment of decision somewhat easier — less grogginess, less of the specific disorientation that makes “five more minutes” feel physiologically urgent rather than merely comfortable. Light exposure indirectly improves the conditions under which the decision gets made. It just doesn’t make the decision. Someone with a consistent light routine and someone with none are both fully capable of pressing snooze; the first person probably finds it slightly easier to resist, not impossible to do.

What Actually Intervenes at the Decision Point

If the failure point is the ten seconds after the alarm fires, the intervention has to live in that same window — not upstream of it. This is closer to what the witness effect around waking up is actually describing: the presence of someone who will know whether you got up changes what happens in that specific moment, in a way that circadian entrainment simply cannot, because it operates on the decision itself rather than on the body’s readiness to make a good one. It’s also part of why the alarm moment is a worse candidate for willpower-based fixes than people assume — decision fatigue is highest in exactly the compromised, half-asleep state the alarm interrupts, which is the opposite of the well-rested, clear-headed condition most self-improvement advice quietly assumes the reader will be in when it matters.

None of this is an argument against morning light. Get the light. It does what it claims to do, and the case for it, made carefully elsewhere on this blog, is solid. It just isn’t an argument for a specific alarm-moment behavior, because it was never aimed at one — a distinction with a real practical consequence, which is that fixing the circadian side while leaving the decision side untouched still ends with the same hand on the same snooze button.
