The term comes from industrial and interface engineering, not self-help. A car that won’t shift into reverse while the door is open. A microwave that won’t run with the door ajar. Nobody is relying on the driver’s good judgment in that moment — the geometry of the machine has simply removed the bad option from the table. Usability researcher Donald Norman popularized the term in his writing on everyday objects, describing forcing functions as constraints that prevent an action rather than merely warning against it.
Most morning advice is the opposite of a forcing function. It’s a suggestion, aimed at a version of you that doesn’t yet exist at 6am. Put your phone across the room, and you’ve built something closer to the real thing — not a stronger suggestion, but a small piece of geometry that makes staying in bed marginally more expensive to choose.
The honest limit of the idea: almost nothing about a morning is fully forced. A determined enough person can walk across the room, silence the alarm, and get back into bed. A forcing function raises the cost of the wrong move. It rarely makes it impossible. That’s a smaller promise than the term sounds like it’s making, and worth remembering before building a whole routine on one.
