Mark Twain Never Told Anyone to Eat a Frog
The live-frog morning advice traces to a French toad remark about dinner parties, not Twain, and no controlled trial of hardest-first turned up.

Nicolas Chamfort’s maxims, published in 1795, record a remark about swallowing a toad each morning. Later writers made it a frog and handed it to Mark Twain. Quote Investigator found no evidence Twain said it; the earliest Twain link is an Ohio newspaper from 1988, 78 years after his death.
The toad was about dinner parties
Chamfort’s Maximes et pensées has a M. de Lassay (Armand de Madaillan, 1652 to 1738) saying that a person should swallow a toad every morning, so that nothing is disgusting for the rest of a day spent in society.
The disgust was other people. Nobody was ranking tasks.
Brian Tracy’s Eat That Frog! (Berrett-Koehler, 2001) made it a method: do your worst task first.
A borrowed quote cannot prove an order
Whether the hardest task belongs first is a claim about sequence. A search for a controlled trial assigning people to hardest-first or hardest-later turned up none, only essays and the quote itself, repeated until it sounds like evidence.
The idea is not silly: a dreaded task done early stops costing attention. But “first” assumes your sharpest hours start at waking, which depends on your chronotype.
The defensible version is smaller: finish the avoided task before the day offers excuses, and treat order as a hypothesis. A person watching your first ten minutes (body doubling) may do more than the slogan.
Once the quote’s origin is settled, the practical question is which task is the frog, and a dread-times-cost scoring method answers it. Another much-repeated productivity line with a shaky pedigree, Eisenhower’s urgent-and-important remark, gets the same treatment in the origin of the Eisenhower Matrix.
