How Much Sleep Do Commercial Fishing Crews Get During an Active Season?

A 32-foot bowpicker runs gillnet off the mouth of the Naknek River during a Bristol Bay sockeye opener, spray coming over the bow rail in the wind, the net drum grinding as it hauls, two people aboard instead of the usual three because the skipper’s regular deckhand tore a shoulder the week before. The opener will run twelve hours, maybe eighteen if the Alaska Department of Fish and Game extends it, and neither person aboard has slept more than four hours a night since the run started. There is no third person to relieve either of them. When the net comes up heavy, someone has to be alert enough to notice a snag before it becomes a person’s hand or foot caught in gear under load.
Most writing about sleep and accountability, including on this site, assumes the obstacle is a person choosing to hit snooze on their own alarm; DontSnooze’s model, for instance, is built around a friend who can see whether someone actually got up. That framing doesn’t apply here. Nobody on a gillnetter during an opener is choosing whether to sleep. The tide, the run, and the season length are choosing for them.
What a Watch Actually Looks Like
Commercial fishing isn’t one job with one sleep pattern; it’s several distinct problems wearing the same job title, and which one a given crew member has depends almost entirely on the fishery. On a Gulf shrimp trawler or a Bering Sea groundfish trawler running a multi-week trip, the boat typically fishes around the clock and the crew works a fixed rotation, commonly six hours on and six off, or four and eight, a rhythm closely resembling a merchant-marine watch. It produces less total sleep than a land job, split into two broken blocks a day, but it’s at least predictable: everyone aboard knows when their watch starts and when it ends. New England groundfish and lobster boats running multi-day trips tend to follow a similar pattern, and the international convention governing training for fishing-vessel crews, the IMO’s STCW-F, sets minimum competency standards worldwide but stops short of the binding hours-of-rest floor that the parallel STCW convention imposes on merchant mariners; fishing crews were carved out of that protection from the start.
Openers work differently, and this is the pattern that shows up hardest in casualty investigations. Alaska salmon fisheries, many halibut and sablefish trips before individual quotas reorganized them, and Dungeness crab seasons on the West Coast are all managed as short, fixed windows set by regulators to protect the fish stock; crew rest was never part of that calculation. A boat either fishes the window or loses the trip’s income entirely, with no partial credit for stopping to rest partway through. On a small boat with a two- or three-person crew, that usually means someone stays awake for the entire opener, sustained by coffee and the knowledge that the window closes on a clock nobody aboard controls.
Commercial Fishing Crews Sleep Least During the Shortest, Highest-Value Windows
Sleep during an active fishing season is not a fixed number; it depends heavily on which fishery and which point in the season a crew is working. On multi-week trawl or longline trips with an organized watch rotation, crew members generally get something in the range of five to six broken hours in a 24-hour period, split across two shifts, which is short of the amount sleep researchers recommend but at least regular and repeated night after night. During short, high-value openings in derby-style or run-dependent fisheries, that number can fall much further; it’s plausible for a crew member on a 12-to-24-hour Bristol Bay opener or an unrationalized crab period to get close to no sleep at all until the window closes, a reasoned estimate based on how these openings are known to be worked rather than a figure drawn from any single published study of hours actually logged. Neither number describes a full fishing season, either. A gillnetter might run several openers a week for a month straight, each one followed by only a few hours to mend gear, sell the catch, and sleep before the tide sets the next window; the deficit from one opener doesn’t fully clear before the next begins. What drives the difference isn’t willpower or discipline; a fishing season compresses months of a family’s income into a handful of legally defined hours, and no regulation currently requires anyone to stop fishing to rest during them.
What the Safety Data Show
The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries has, in most years it has published data, put commercial fishing among the two or three most dangerous jobs it tracks, with a fatality rate that has run tens of times higher than the rate across all U.S. occupations combined; logging is usually the only category that competes with it for the top spot. That figure counts deaths, not injuries or near-misses, so it almost certainly understates how often fatigue plays a role in a bad outcome that stops short of a fatality: a slip on a wet deck, a hand caught in a winch, a boat that grounds because whoever had the watch nodded off at the wheel.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health studies this territory directly, through its Western States Division and a project called the Commercial Fishing Incident Database, which compiles Coast Guard casualty reports and investigation records for fishing-vessel deaths and losses going back to roughly 2000, initially for Alaska and later extended to other U.S. regions. NIOSH’s published work on the database has repeatedly flagged fatigue as a contributing factor in fishing-vessel casualties, particularly ones involving vessel disasters (capsizing, sinking, flooding) and falls overboard, where a tired crew member misjudges a wave, a line, or their own footing. Falls overboard are especially unforgiving in this line of work: cold-water immersion can incapacitate a person within minutes, and a crew member who goes over the side alone, at night, with no one awake enough to notice, has a survival window measured in single-digit minutes rather than hours. What the database can’t do is produce a clean average for how many hours a working crew member sleeps a night; it’s built from casualty investigations after something has already gone wrong, a different kind of evidence entirely than a sleep study following crews who never had an incident at all.
Why This Isn’t Mainly About Long Hours
The counterintuitive part of the safety record is that raw physical exhaustion doesn’t appear to be the main hazard on its own. It’s the way fatigue erodes judgment at the exact moments a fishing vessel most needs good judgment: reading a squall line correctly, deciding whether to reduce speed in a following sea, deciding whether a load is stable enough to justify hauling another string of pots before turning for port. A deckhand who’s simply tired can usually still haul a line; a deckhand who’s been awake for eighteen hours is more likely to misjudge the line’s tension, or the wave that’s about to hit the deck, or how much longer the weather will hold. Investigators looking at vessel disasters have repeatedly found decisions made in the hours before a sinking that, in hindsight, look like exactly the kind of misjudgment sleep researchers associate with extended wakefulness rather than with recklessness or inexperience: pressing on instead of running for shelter, overloading a hold, dismissing an early sign that the boat was riding lower than it should.
“You don’t sleep during an opener, you nap.” That’s how one composite deckhand put it, a voice assembled from crew interviews and safety-training material rather than a single real person, offered here to put a human register on the aggregate data above. Fifteen minutes leaning against the cabin while the net soaks, then back up when the buoy line goes taut. Fifteen minutes is usually enough to get a body upright again. What it doesn’t restore is the judgment to read the wave that’s already breaking over the rail before it does damage.
How the Crew Gets Paid, and What That Does to Sleep
Part of why this looks so different from other transportation jobs comes down to how the crew is paid. A truck driver earns by the mile or the hour and answers to the FMCSA’s hours-of-service rule, six numbers that cap how long they can drive before rest is mandatory. An airline pilot answers to a comparable federal rest floor built after a fatigue-linked crash forced Congress’s hand, a rule briefly worth naming here even though it gets the fuller treatment elsewhere. A fishing crew member is typically paid a share of the boat’s catch value once expenses come out, an arrangement that places most of them outside the Fair Labor Standards Act’s overtime protections and, more to the point, ties every hour spent resting directly to a smaller payout for everyone aboard. Sleep isn’t merely inconvenient on a boat paid this way; it carries a price tag the crew can calculate in real time.
No federal rule fills the gap that pricing creates. The Coast Guard’s authority over fishing vessels, expanded through legislation including the 2010 Coast Guard Authorization Act, covers survival suits, life rafts, emergency beacons, stability standards, and periodic dockside safety exams, requirements that have measurably reduced deaths from vessels sinking with no way for the crew to survive in the water. None of it caps how many hours a crew may fish before someone has to rest. The gap reads less like an oversight than a reflection of the industry’s economics: a duty-hour rule that told a Bristol Bay boat to stop fishing partway through a 12-hour opener would, correctly, be read by that crew as a rule that shrinks their income for the year.
What’s Changed, and What Hasn’t
The clearest safety gains in commercial fishing haven’t come from rules about rest at all; they’ve come from rules that removed the reason to skip it. When federal fishery managers converted the Pacific halibut and sablefish fisheries to individual quotas in 1995, a season that had run as a handful of frantic, weather-defying days each year turned into a fishery open for most of the year. Crews could choose calm weather and a full night’s sleep, because the fish they were entitled to catch were no longer going to someone else while they waited it out. A comparable shift happened in the Bering Sea crab fisheries in the mid-2000s, when the fleet moved away from the short, competitive derby seasons that gave “Deadliest Catch” its name toward a longer, individually allocated season. Researchers who studied the change generally linked the calmer, extended season to fewer vessel losses. The available casualty records support the direction of that improvement far better than they support pinning an exact share of it on fatigue alone: the same change also meant fewer boats competing, steadier prices, and less pressure to run in a gale, and the records don’t cleanly separate those effects from each other.
Training has filled some of the remaining space. Organizations like the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association run cold-water survival and stability courses, often with Coast Guard and NIOSH support, aimed squarely at the vessel losses and overboard deaths that fatigue tends to compound. None of it, though, amounts to a rule that a boat must stop fishing after a fixed number of hours, and none of the fisheries that still run on short, fixed openings, salmon chief among them, have moved to a quota model that would let a crew choose calm weather and sleep over a race against a closing date. For those crews, the choice most other federally regulated transportation workers now have by law is, in practice, still not theirs to make.
