What Biphasic Sleep Actually Means

Biphasic sleep means exactly two sleep periods within a 24-hour cycle, as opposed to one consolidated block (monophasic) or three-plus short periods spread across the day (polyphasic). It covers two very different patterns that get conflated constantly: a nighttime sleep plus a daytime nap, and the historical pattern of two nighttime segments separated by an hour or more of quiet wakefulness.

Both patterns are biphasic by definition. They are not the same experience, and confusing them is where most of the popular writing on this topic goes wrong.

The two things people mean by “biphasic”

Nap-based biphasic sleep is the common modern version: roughly six to seven hours at night, plus a 20- to 90-minute nap in the early afternoon. This is the default sleep pattern in a number of cultures — Mediterranean and Latin American siesta traditions, and much of the historical record from tropical and subtropical regions where midday heat made an afternoon lull practical. It’s well tolerated because the two segments together usually add up to a normal total sleep need.

Segmented biphasic sleep is the historical pattern, and it’s the one that generates the most confused internet writing. Historian A. Roger Ekirch spent more than a decade combing pre-industrial European court depositions, diaries, and medical texts and found consistent, casual references to “first sleep” and “second sleep” — two nighttime blocks separated by a period, often around an hour, of quiet wakefulness used for prayer, conversation, sex, or simply lying in the dark. Ekirch’s research, most fully laid out in his 2005 book At Day’s Close: Night in Times Past, argues this was the ordinary sleep pattern across much of Europe before artificial lighting became widespread, not a curiosity or a disorder.

The pattern wasn’t purely historical speculation, either. In 1992, psychiatrist Thomas Wehr ran an experiment at the National Institute of Mental Health in which subjects lived under artificially shortened daylight — fourteen hours of darkness a night, mimicking pre-industrial winter conditions, for about a month. Their sleep spontaneously reorganized into two segments separated by one to three hours of quiet wakefulness, closely resembling the pattern Ekirch found in the historical record. That’s a genuinely interesting piece of evidence: it suggests segmented sleep is less a relic of pre-modern culture and more something the body reorganizes into on its own, given enough uninterrupted darkness and nothing — light, schedules, alarms — holding it to one consolidated block.

Why almost nobody sleeps this way now

Artificial light is the leading explanation, and it’s a simple one: extending usable light past sunset compresses the window most people have available for sleep, and a compressed window tends to consolidate into one block rather than split into two with a wakeful gap in the middle. Add fixed work schedules, commutes, and alarm clocks, and there’s little room left for an hour of unstructured wakefulness in the middle of the night without cutting into total sleep time.

This is worth being precise about, because it’s easy to over-romanticize: segmented sleep working well for pre-industrial populations doesn’t mean modern schedules are unnatural or that everyone would be better off adopting it. Wehr’s subjects were living under fourteen hours of darkness nightly, which most people with jobs, school runs, and commutes are not going to replicate. Both Ekirch’s historical subjects and Wehr’s experimental ones were operating under conditions — long, dark, unlit nights — that essentially nobody with a modern schedule has access to, which caps how much lifestyle advice this specific research can honestly support.

The nap version, in practice

If segmented biphasic sleep is mostly a historical and experimental curiosity, nap-based biphasic sleep is a completely practical, currently-in-use pattern for a large share of the world’s population. The core rule that keeps it healthy rather than harmful is arithmetic: night sleep plus nap should add up to a normal total sleep need for that individual, not substitute for it. A person who needs eight hours and is getting six at night and a 30-minute nap is not practicing healthy biphasic sleep — they’re sleep-restricted with an extra step.

The practical risk with nap-based biphasic sleep isn’t the pattern itself, it’s nap length. Naps under 30 minutes tend to leave people in light sleep stages and easy to rouse. Push past 60-90 minutes and a nap starts intruding into deep sleep, and waking out of it produces a heavier, harder grogginess — which is a separate problem from segmented sleep entirely, and closer to what shows up when an alarm interrupts the wrong sleep stage generally.

Nap-based biphasic sleep only works as a schedule if the second sleep period actually ends when it’s supposed to, which is a harder problem than it sounds for a 20-minute afternoon nap. Most people either oversleep it, or never fall asleep in the first place because part of them is watching the clock, worried about oversleeping it — the same loop described in the piece on alarm anxiety, just compressed into a twenty-minute window instead of a full night.
