I Timed the Gap Between My Alarm and My Feet on the Floor for 30 Days
Not the snooze count — the actual minutes between the alarm sound and my feet on the floor, logged for a month. The average was smaller than I expected. The range was not.

My phone’s screen-time log already knows exactly when I pick it up in the morning, down to the minute. What it doesn’t know is when I actually get out of bed, which is a different, more consequential number than the one it’s tracking. So for thirty mornings in July and August, I used a cheap kitchen timer — not my phone, on purpose, since reaching for the phone was part of what I was measuring — and started it the instant my alarm went off, stopping it the moment both feet hit the floor.
Thirty mornings, one person, no control group. This tells you something about me and nothing certain about anyone else. With that said:
Average gap: 14 minutes. Range: 1 to 41 minutes.
That average surprised me a little — I’d have guessed closer to 25, since it never feels like 14 minutes in the moment. The range surprised me more. A 41-minute morning and a 1-minute morning happened four days apart, same alarm time, same bedtime the night before, roughly the same reported sleep quality. Whatever was driving that spread, it wasn’t the obvious variables I was tracking.
What actually correlated with a short gap
I logged four things alongside the timer: bedtime, a 1-5 self-rated sleep quality guess, whether I had something scheduled in the first 30 minutes of the day that involved another person, and where my phone spent the night. Of those four, only one showed a pattern worth mentioning.
Mornings with something scheduled that involved another person in the first half hour — a call, a workout someone was expecting me at, a video check-in with my DontSnooze group — averaged a 6-minute gap. Mornings with nothing scheduled until later averaged 19 minutes. That’s a 13-minute difference, on a sample small enough that I wouldn’t bet money on the exact number holding up in someone else’s data, but the direction was consistent across the month: 11 of the 12 “someone’s expecting me” mornings beat the monthly average, and only 3 of the 18 unscheduled mornings did.
Sleep quality and bedtime, which I expected to matter more, didn’t show a clean relationship at this sample size. My worst gap (41 minutes) came after a night I rated a 4 out of 5. My best gap (1 minute) came after a 3. I’m not confident enough in 30 data points to say sleep quality doesn’t matter — it almost certainly does, over a longer horizon — just that it wasn’t the variable predicting a given morning’s gap the way I assumed it would going in.
I also tracked whether I’d had caffeine after 2pm the day before, mostly out of curiosity, and it showed no visible pattern at all — which surprised me less, since I’d already half-suspected the caffeine variable was more about how I felt falling asleep than about the actual gap the next morning.
Where I actually used DontSnooze, and where it didn’t help
I’d already been using DontSnooze with two friends before I started this log, so about half the month’s data includes it, not a before-and-after comparison. The mornings I filmed a video for the group were the ones with the shortest gaps — which lines up with the “someone’s expecting me” pattern above, since a video request is a specific, time-stamped version of exactly that condition.
What I won’t oversell: filming a 15-second video at 6:10am, half-conscious, is mildly unpleasant on the mornings I’d genuinely rather not be awake, and there were two days in the month I sent the video looking and sounding like someone recovering from surgery, which is not a flattering use of the feature. It also doesn’t touch the biological side of a bad night — no app fixes a 41-minute gap that’s actually caused by real sleep debt rather than a lack of a reason to get up. What it reliably did was shrink the gap on mornings where the obstacle was inertia rather than exhaustion, which — based on this one very small dataset — was most of them.
Thirty days of one person’s mornings
Self-reported sleep quality with no objective measure behind it, and a timer method that depends on me remembering to actually start and stop it, which I forgot twice and had to estimate — this wouldn’t survive peer review, and I’m not submitting it anywhere that would ask. What it did was replace a vague sense of “mornings are hard” with an actual number — 14 minutes on average, 6 when someone was expecting me, 19 when nobody was — and that number is more useful to me than the vague sense was, even with every caveat attached to it. The broader research on habit formation would tell me to be skeptical of a month-long n of one, and it would be right to.
I’m going to keep the timer running past thirty days, mostly because I want to see whether the “someone’s expecting me” gap holds at a bigger sample or turns out to be a coincidence of one particular month.
