Opal runs on friction: schedule a session, the app locks out your distracting apps, and a stricter mode makes quitting early deliberately annoying. It’s a genuinely well-built blocking tool that does exactly what it sets out to do. What it sets out to do, though, is only half the job — “make the bad option harder to reach” and “make failure cost something” are two different behavior-change levers, and Opal only pulls one of them, which explains exactly where it holds up and exactly where it quietly stops working.

What Opal actually does well

Give Opal credit for the part it’s built for: in-the-moment impulse blocking. If your failure pattern is picking up your phone reflexively — the fifteen-times-an-hour unlock, not a considered decision to scroll — putting a hard barrier in the way works, because you’re not overriding a plan, you’re interrupting a reflex before it completes. Friction is a well-supported lever for exactly this kind of low-deliberation behavior. Opal’s stricter focus mode, built to resist being switched off mid-session, is the right tool for that specific job.

Where the friction runs out

The trouble starts with what happens outside the scheduled session, and with what happens when you decide, deliberately, that you want back in. Nothing about how Opal is built makes that decision cost anything. You can end a session, delete the app, or simply not schedule one in the first place, and the only entity that registers this is the app itself — which has no opinion, no memory anyone else can see, and nothing at stake in whether you comply tomorrow. The app’s own streak counter adds visibility, but a streak counter is not a witness. It doesn’t ask you anything. It doesn’t notice a gap the way a person would.

This is the hard ceiling of every pure-blocking tool, not a flaw specific to Opal: friction-based systems are excellent at stopping reflexive behavior and close to useless against a deliberate decision to route around them, because routing around a block that only the blocked person can see costs that person nothing socially. A blocked app you unblock in private is a private event. Nobody has to know, which means nobody’s reaction is part of the cost.

The real number here isn’t Opal’s — it’s the category’s

I don’t have Opal’s internal retention data, and I wouldn’t trust a screenshot of it if I did. What’s publicly documented instead is the broader pattern in self-control app research: engagement with willpower-support and blocking apps drops sharply in the weeks after install, in line with the same falloff curve seen across most self-monitoring tools once novelty wears off. This is the expected curve for any tool whose only enforcement is the user’s own continued cooperation with a system they can quietly opt out of at zero visible cost — a pattern that applies well beyond Opal specifically.

Where a social witness does the thing friction can’t

The gap Opal leaves is exactly the gap a chosen witness fills: not stopping the reflex, but making the deliberate override visible to someone whose reaction you care about. DontSnooze’s version of this — proof sent to named friends, an unflattering camera-roll photo released automatically if you don’t — works on the after-the-fact cost side of the equation, not the in-the-moment friction side. That’s a real, meaningful difference in how the two tools operate, not a marketing distinction.

It’s also a fair place to turn the critique back around, because DontSnooze has the mirror-image weakness: it does nothing to stop the reflexive fifteen-times-an-hour phone pickup in the moment, the exact case Opal’s blocking handles well. A social witness only activates after you’ve already decided to check in on a goal or admit you didn’t — it has no answer for pure impulse, because impulse, by definition, happens before you’ve engaged with any system at all.

Put plainly: if your problem is reflexive, in-the-moment phone pickups, a friction tool like Opal is doing the right job, and a social accountability app isn’t built to solve that part. If your problem is deliberately deciding to quietly quit on something you told yourself you’d do — the override, not the reflex — friction alone won’t catch you, because you’re not fighting a reflex at that point, you’re making a choice nobody else can see. That’s the part that needs a witness, not a lock.

Realistically, the two aren’t competitors so much as answers to different failure moments in the same day. Using a blocking tool for the impulsive hours and a named witness for the deliberate decisions is a more complete answer than expecting either one to cover both jobs on its own — a point that holds regardless of which specific blocking app you pick, Opal included.
